Mark Fisher Appointed Trustee to Represent
Zone 3 (Barrhaven/Knoxdale–Merivale)
Mark Fisher will be the new Public School Board Trustee to represent Zone 3 (Barrhaven/Knoxdale–Merivale) in the city of Ottawa. Mr. Fisher is currently a Senior Advisor with Public Safety Canada. Over his 11 year career Mark Fisher has become well known for his pragmatic public policy, communications, and strategic management advice to senior levels of government and corporate executives.

Elected to
Ontario Public School Boards’ Association Executive Council
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s voice will be well represented at the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) thanks to the election of Trustees Riley Brockington as Vice President of OPSBA and Trustee David Moen as the Eastern Region Vice President. The results of the election mean that the District now has two representatives on the influential OPSBA Executive Council.

New Elementary School in South Stittsville to Operate in School Year 2011-2012
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will immediately begin the process to design, build, and open a new elementary school in south Stittsville. The Ministry of Education has announced that it will fund one OCDSB capital priority project worth $9,925, 493. The new school home to 600 public elementary students is expected to open its doors in the 2011-2012 school year.

Welcoming Two New Student Trustees To The Board Table
Emma Squires of Nepean High School and Wilson Zhang, of Bell High School will represent the student voice at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board table commencing August 1, 2009. Their term of office is one year.
Student trustees are elected student representatives responsible for promoting and advancing the interests of pupils. They are elected by their peers who sit on the Student Trustee Advisory Committee and the Student Presidents’ Council.

Board of Trustees Approve Budget for the 2009-2010 School Year
Trustees of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board tonight approved a final operating budget of $706.35 million dollars for the 2009-2010 school year.
The budget includes the use of $7.0 million of working fund reserves to offset the impact of changes in education grants and a one-year special education funding shortfall of $2.0 million.

Call for Applications — Trustee Zone 3

Candidates for the position of Public School Trustee to represent Zone 3 (Barrhaven/Knoxdale–Merivale) in the city of Ottawa.
Following the call for applications qualified candidates will be invited to make a five-minute presentation to the Board at a special Committee of the Whole public meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2009. The successful candidate will be sworn in at the Board's regular meeting scheduled for Monday, June 22, 2009. The successful candidate will serve until the end of the current term — November 30, 2010.

To All Parents/Guardians and Staff Regarding Novel H1N1 flu
As you have already learned through the media, a strain of influenza (novel H1N1 flu) has been reported in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Countries around the world and the World Health Organization are investigating this illness.
As always all Ottawa-Carleton District School Board elementary and secondary schools remain in close contact with the Ottawa Public Health Unit and are fully prepared to respond to advice and direction aimed at protecting the health of our school communities.We have been advised by Ottawa Public Health that there are no actions that need to be taken by schools or the board at this point beyond the proactive advice that is provided to parents and the school community offered in our letter to Parents/Guardians. Reporting thresholds for illness are also outlined in this letter. If a situation arises at any school that presents an imminent threat to the safety of students as determined by Ottawa Public Health, the Ottawa-Carleton District school Board will communicate that information to its larger school community immediately.
Information and instruction on proper hand washing technique is already in place at every school and is being renewed and re-emphasized.

Enterprising Students at Castlefrank and John Young elementary schools Win Awards
Castlefrank Elementary School and John Young Elementary School in Kanata won BMO Financial Group National Student Innovation Awards at the Entrepreneurial Adventure Showcase held June 11 at Place d’Orleans. Ottawopoly designed by Grade 6 and 7 students at Castlefrank E.S. won in the Originality category and John Young Elementary School’s Green Thumbs project won in the Enterprising Spirit Category. Winners received a plaque for their school and a cash award to further enhance entrepreneurial programs.

To All Parents/Guardians and Staff Regarding Changes to Bussing
The following changes to delivery of transportation services were approved at the April 28, 2009 Board meeting. Changes to bell times will be made to improve the District’s transportation efficiency for the 2009-2010 school year. The Ottawa Catholic School Board has also approved time changes to accommodate new busing arrangements.

Student Saves the Day
Leslie Park student Julian Ford was specially recognized at a school assembly for his quick thinking when fire broke out in his neighbourhood. SRO Constable Lori Fahey and Fire Prevention officials praised Julian for alerting his mother who called 9-1-1. A three-alarm blaze was contained to just one townhouse unit.
Character Education in Action at North Gower/Marlborough Public School
Grade 5 students at North Gower/Marlborough Public School celebrated their second annual Who Is Nobody project. This year 45 students took home a plain denim doll and completed a service project to help someone in their community. Each student then placed a token, which represented their project, on the doll that could now be called a somebody. Students reached out to the elderly, to animals, to service organizations, and to the environment for their projects, and proved that everyone can make a difference.

Woodroffe High School Students Win Adobe Youth Voices Video Contest
Students from Woodroffe High School received the award for Best Video of 2009 at the Adobe Youth Voices event on June 4th. The students' video entitled "Bullying" was produced and edited by students under the supervision and guidance of teacher Carolynn Sheu. The school was among a handful in the Ottawa area that had the opportunity to participate in this unique program.

SKILLS CANADA – ONTARIO
The Ontario Technological Skills Competition showcases the talented youth of Ontario. Over 1500 of the brightest young people of this province competed in one of 60 skills contests. Kevin Shea, Trades & Technology Instructional Coach for Secondary students, says “The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board had the best overall showing of any school board in Ontario.”
