PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT from the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board

Summer Closures — Offices closed for two weeks


Ottawa-Carleton District School Board administrative offices will be closed for two weeks this summer from July 28 to August 8, 2008 inclusive. Secondary school offices will also be closed July 28 to August 8 and possibly other additional days. Please contact the secondary school directly for specific closure dates.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY AWARENESS DAY

Sunday, August 24, 2008 / 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Local school boards, in conjunction with the school bus operators within the city of Ottawa, will be presenting a School Bus Safety Awareness Day on Sunday, August 24, 2008, for all first-time bus riders. This co-operative venture will be held concurrently at five different school sites within the city of Ottawa.

Board of Trustees Approve Budget for the 2008-2009 School Year – strategic initiatives mean good things for students

Trustees of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board approved a final budget for the 2008-2009 school year of $651.3 million. This represents a $16.6 million spending increase over the previous year’s budget.

kids_dancingJohn Young Elementary School Knows They Can Dance!

Two thirds of the entire student body from John Young Elementary School in Kanata participated in the So We Think We Can Dance, spring production. Students spent just over six months preparing for the professional-style dance show. The students from JK-6 performed dance numbers featuring tap, jazz, ballroom, hip hop, and gymnastics techniques. Teacher Lisa Levitan directed the show, which included a finale featuring all 230 dancers, and a video of the dancers practicing for, and talking about each of their dance routines. Special thanks to School Council members for helping with costumes, flowers and selling a DVD of the show.

Students from Henry Munro, John Young and Alta Vista, Knoxdale, Carleton Heights, J.H. Putman and Roberta Bondar elementary schools as well as West Carleton Secondary School attended the screening of a special film, Journey to Little Rock — the Untold Story of Minnijean Brown Trickey. Canadian activist and Little Rock Nine civil rights pioneer Minnijean Brown Trickey who attended the screening on June 12, spoke to students about creative, non-violent options to social change.
