Caring for the World Around Us through EarthCARE

Imagine a world where students learn to take responsibility and care for the environment. Through EarthCARE, an action-oriented environmental program in our schools, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has taken up the challenge. Our goal is to make environmental stewardship and action a part of school culture.
Through the EarthCARE program, students and staff are making an impact not only in their schools but in their homes and in the greater community. For example, EarthCARE teams in schools actively promote LOCO – Lights Off/ Computers Off. As a direct result, school audits indicate that students and staff have been able to avoid energy costs of approximately $1 million each year from LOCO alone.
What else are students and teachers doing? Beautifying school yards, cleaning up community parks, walking to school, bringing litterless lunches, and researching Canadian endangered animals. And, it doesn’t stop there, staff in administration are working together to make the necessary upgrades to facilities in order to conserve energy, participate in recycling, and reduce waste.
